ATLANTA - It's a disturbing trend happening inschoolsall over the country. Violence, like the recent school shooting in Ohio, taking the lives of children. But a local effort to teach students to keep the peace is underway.
After the beating death of Douglasville 18-year-old Bobby Tillman, community leaders decided enough was enough.Localradio station HOT 107.9 joined in the anti-bullying movement and wants kids to give peace a chance.
"This is not it, life is so much bigger." That's the message Brandi Harvey is trying to send to some Brown Middle Schoolstudents.
Harvey is an anti-bullying advocate. She's also the daughter of comedian, author and radio personality Steve Harvey. And she says the bullying we've been hearing about happening in our schools is just a symptom of a bigger problem.
"Bullying is an issue but the greater issue is the issues that we bring from our home life, our family life, our community. Why we make the choices that we make. Issues that are impacting our community," said anti-bullying advocate Brandi Harvey.
As part of the Bullying is Not Hot Tour sponsored by Hot 107.9, she and a panel of community leaders travel to schools once a week to push their message of making better choices -- telling them better choices lead to better outcomes.
"We want them to understand that they're actions have consequences and sometimes, you may not wake up from a fight. You may take someone else's life. You may do something that causes you to be in a situation where you don't come home," said Rashidah Jenkins of HOT 107.9
Just like a California 10-year-old, who died last week after a fight with a classmate. Her death now ruled a homicide.
"Now you have kids where, back in our day it was like, yeah she talked about me so what? I don't care. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. Well, now these kids are being so affected that they're talking about killing themselves," said Harvey.
The tour emphasizes mentoring and open discussions but Harvey says she want kids to know when you deal with negative situations in a positive way, life gets better.
"We've been there, we've done that but look how we overcame it and you can do the same thing with your life," said Harvey.
The Bullying is Not Hot Tour organizers say they want students to leave educated but more importantly, empowered to spread the message of peace in their school.
